Food and Oceans in Aotearoa New Zealand

Throughout the program, you will have the opportunity to learn about the diverse human cultures of the South Pacific and the unique ways in which they have preserved and adapted ancient foodways and methods of protecting the ocean environment. You will also explore the relationship between food, ocean, and identity in the Pacific, with a particular focus on themes of migration, travel, and home. You will gain insight into historical and current events such as war, decolonization, tourism, and health.

This program will be based in three different locations in Aotearoa New Zealand: Auckland, Coromandel, and the Bay of Islands. In Auckland, you will participate in a traditional Maori welcome, and also take a ferry ride to the Terrestrial Conservation area. The Bay of Islands portion of the program will focus on Environmental and Marine Sciences and Conservation, including a visit to the Goat Island Marine Reserve and Research Centre. In Coromandel, the focus will be on Food, Spirits, and you will have the opportunity to participate in a Noho Marae.

In addition to classroom instruction, the program will include visits to local museums and Cook Islander and Maori cultural performances. You will also have the chance to engage in experiential learning with contemporary environmental practitioners and food experts.

GEO program fees cover tuition, housing and some meals, excursions, course materials, and on-site orientation. Insurance and a 24-hour emergency service are also included. For information on scholarship funding, please visit the Scholarships & Aid page on our website.
